Discovering the culturally-rich histories of Cyprus can start in the cities where all flights to Cyprus land.
Visiting the historic island country of Cyprus is an experience steeped in cultural discoveries, adventurous expeditions, and beachside relaxation. Flights to Cyprus are flown everyday by most major European and Middle Eastern airlines – including the island’s own Cyprus Airways. With two international airports located on the island – in Larnaca and Paphos – making your way to this beautiful island is the easy part. Deciding which activities to indulge in while you visit is the challenging (and exciting) part of your holiday planning!
Discovering the entire island in one trip is a tough feat (official measurements put the island at 240km long and 100km wide, at its longest and widest points, including several mountain ranges), and unless you can visit for the maximum allowable time of 3 months, then it is likely that you will have to choose a handful of the most desirable places to visit on your holiday.
Explorations the moment you get off the plane
Since there is a good chance you will start your Cyprus adventure in either Paphos or Larnaca onboard one of the Cyprus airlines, why not start your trip where your trip starts? Most flights to Cyprus arrive at the main airport in Larnaca, and if that’s where you land there are a number of wonderful sites to see and experiences to have!
Larnaca is one of the oldest cities in the world that has enjoyed continuous inhabitants, and is also a popular tourist town for its historical value and for being located both on the beach and only an hour’s drive away from the mountain region that includes the capital city of Nicosia.
One of the most popular beachside destinations in the city is the palm-tree lined promenade, which travels along the coast and walks you past inviting shops, an array of seafood restaurants, and quaint cafes. The walk ends at the Larnaca Medieval Museum, where visitors can go inside and view relics from the city’s long historic past that stretches back thousands of years. If you really want to see something of historical importance in Larnaca, visit the ruins of Ancient Kitium, which date all the way back to the 13th century B.C.
While you’re staying in Larnaca, take an afternoon and head up to the capital city of Nicosia, which is about an hour’s drive away. Nicosia is equally, if not more, steeped in historical importance as Larnaca. Taverns, jewellery shops, and handcrafted workshops mix in with living relics dating back hundreds of years, including the Venetian walls – built to protect the city from incoming Turkish invasion in the 1500s – and the ancient churches and mosques that each have their own unique story of creation and survival.
Relax by the beach or bask in the mythical and religious significance of Paphos
If you first arrive in Paphos via your Cyprus Airways flight – or on one of the other numerous airlines flying into the country’s second largest airport – take advantage of all the great experiences this popular beach town and historic geographical location has to offer. There are many beachside resorts in the area of Kato Pafos, equipped with luxurious hotel resorts and ocean activities, including scuba diving, sailing, water sports, and much more.
You can also go exploring the city’s many famous landmarks. The city of Paphos is marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural significance. Among other landmarks, the city is the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, and is where the bible says Saul of Tarsus made the historical transformation into Paul. Other important landmarks in and around the city include the Tombs of the Kings and the Paphos Castle, both dating back to the Roman and Byzantine eras.
While in Paphos, take in the atmosphere of a football or volleyball game in Paphos’ Pafiako Stadium, where the fans get rowdy and a good time – plus a great cultural experience – is guaranteed.
The city just recently opened to traffic within the last 10 years, and the only public transportation is by bus. So, planning out what you want to do – and how you’re going to get to the different locations throughout the city – is a crucial step in making sure you fulfil all your holiday desires in Paphos.
Guaranteeing the best holiday experience imaginable
Planning a visit to Cyprus is an exciting experience and can also be a bit overwhelming. Figuring out where the most important activities on your list lie throughout the country is the key to a successful and memorable holiday. A good idea is to start your holiday in one of the two cities where you land, and continue on your expedition from there.
There are always available flights to Cyprus on board Cyprus Airways or any other Cyprus-bound airline. Check the availability of flights out of your departure city and start planning the holiday of a lifetime!
